Paisley Abbey
19:45 All Angels
Four young stunning, talented girls make up All Angels - the first Female Classical Supergroup.

Working beautiful four part harmonies around classical, opera and pop tunes, the girls have crafted a unique and entrancing sound. After they signed a five-album deal with Decca in 2006, their first two discs built them an awesome reputation in the Classical Crossover market and sold half a million copies. Their success earned the Angels platinum discs, appearances at the Classical Brits and accolades from Sir Paul McCartney, and all this while they were still studying for their A-levels.

Formed in 2005, their eponymous debut album was the UK’s fastest-selling debut for a classical act, and won them a platinum disc, reaching No 9 in the pop charts and No 2 in the Classical charts. This and their second album, Into Paradise have both been nominated for Classical Brit Awards and they have performed extensively around the UK. These young ladies have already sold over 400,000 albums and will release their third album, Fly Away, early 2010.

On the night All Angels will be supported by Les Sirènes, a female chamber choir of 13 students of the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.  Established in 2007 by its present musical director Andrew Nunn, Les Sirènes were entrants in the BBC Choir of the Year competition, semi finalists in the Last Choir Standing competition in 2008 and have also recorded for BBC Radio Scotland. Their busy programme of concerts ranges from carol singing at Christmas time to performing at Cadogan Hall in London: Les Sirènes are passionate about performance.

We are delighted to welcome All Angels to the Paisley Festival.

Don't miss this exciting opportunity to experience the phenomenon live!

Thomas Coats Memorial Church, Paisley
19:45 Festival Chorus
This event gives the opportunity for local and not-so-local regular singers to show their mettle in a programme of popular choral works under the baton of Derek Norval, founder and onetime Director of Paisley's well-established Thomas Coats Memorial Choral Society and now Principal of Music at Douglas Academy.

This year the theme is contrasting commemorations - the 250th anniversary of Handel's death (the ever-popular Zadok the Priest and a chorus from Samson) and the 150th anniversary of Mendelssohn's birth (choruses from Elijah and the evergreen Hear my Prayer) and, with a ‘homecoming’ flavour,  the songs of our local Robert Tannahill - accompanied by the Chamber Orchestra of Douglas Academy Music School (who will also perform some pieces on their own) and John Gormley (Organ).

There will be rehearsals at Thomas Coats for singers on Wednesday 7th October, Monday 12th October and Thursday 15th October (all at 7.30), and Saturday 24th October 2.30 to 4.30, with dress rehearsal on the 25th at 3.00 (concert at 7.45). Singers are required to register for the event, by using the downloadable Registration Form.  Invitations are being sent by post to those who participated last year. New participants are very warmly welcomed.

St Mirin's Cathedral, Paisley
20:00 Ex Cathedra
From its home in Birmingham, Ex Cathedra has established an international reputation as a leading UK choir and Early Music ensemble. Under founder and Artistic Director, Jeffrey Skidmore, Ex Cathedra is known for its vibrant performances and a passion for seeking out not only the best but the unfamiliar and the unexpected in the choral repertoire. Since its formation in 1969, Ex Cathedra has grown into a unique musical resource, comprising specialist choir, vocal consort of 8-12 voices, period-instrument orchestra and thriving education programme. Recent years have seen a major increase in Ex Cathedra's national and international reputation thanks to its trail-blazing performances of Early Music, in particular the French and Latin American Baroque, and its role as a leading exponent of choral training and vocal skills education.  However, their programme for Paisley is distinctively different, on the theme of In the 20th century, after three centuries of 'foreign' settlement, the USA discovered a distinctive musical voice. This programme celebrates the American Renaissance with popular choral music from the enviably simple Shaker and Southern Harmony traditions of the nineteenth century to the sophisticated worlds of composers Barber (including , the iconic choral transcription of his ), Copland and the new-age Lauridsen and Whitacre. The last item features the mezzo-soprano soloist Lucy Ballard.

Ensamble Ditirambo is an exciting group of ten young Mexican musicians, offering a programme of early sacred and secular vocal music from Spain, Mexico and England, accompanied on Renaissance instruments: the vihuela (the grand mother of the guitar), a celtic harp, the complete family of recorders, a chromhorn (a kind of oboe), a bombo legüero (a drum) and a tologamba that (a mix between a guitarron and a viola da gamba).

They have performed widely in Mexico and toured Canada as well as, currently, Scotland, and have corroborated in theatre and dance projects.

Paisley Abbey
Festival Service/Evensong
Choral singing has been part of Paisley Abbey since the 12th century. Even after the Reformation, the services were sung and the 'Sang Scule' (which later became Paisley Grammar School) was formed. The Boys Choir was properly formed in 1907 and, within the last few years, girls have also been admitted.

The choir has sung in cathedrals in various parts of the country and broadcasts regularly on TV and radio. It has also performed and recorded with the major Scottish orchestras.
Not only celebrating the beauty and significance of choral music but also commemorating the Feast of All Saints, the choir will be performing the following music:

At the morning service (11.00am):
Psalm 24 vv1-6
: a responsorial setting
Jubilate Deo: setting for double choir by Giovanni Gabrieli (1554/7-1612)
Anthem: Faire is the Heaven, for double choir, by Sir William Harris (1883-1973)

Choral Evensong (6.30pm):
Responses: William Byrd (1540-1623)
Psalm 145 vv1-9: setting by Thomas William Hanforth (1867-1948)
Canticles: William Byrd (Short Service)
Anthem: O quam gloriosum by Tomas Luis da Vittoria (1548-1611)

These are both church services so there is no charge for admission.  Everyone is welcome!

19:30 Dieci
Dieci, a cappella vocal octet, have been 'wowing' audiences in Scotland with their unique sound and vibrant performances for the past two and a half years. They are a young, dynamic group made up of singers from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, Scotland's premier music conservatoire. They have performed at festivals and private functions across Scotland and five of the singers have sung in the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain and Scotland, and the Ulster Youth Choir, backgrounds which enrich the variety and versatility of this vocal ensemble.

Dieci have a shared love of music old and new, classical to contemporary and British to beyond! They have delighted audiences with their unique approach to music making and have most recently sung at the Balqhuidder Summer Music Series, Brecon Arts Festival, the opening of Winterfest in Glasgow's George Square and the RSAMD Fellows Graduation reception for Lord Attenborough and James McAvoy. Earlier this year, they were highly commended in the Governers' Recital Prize for Chamber Music and were shortlisted for the Enterprise Music Scotland Residency Project. In December 2008, Dieci were Grand Finalists of the BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year competition, the largest and most prestigious competition of its kind in the UK, which was televised from the Royal Festival Hall, London, on BBC Four. 'Outstanding and imaginative'. 'Your diction and ensemble are excellent' - Suzi Digby

'Really engaging, thoughtfully sung and totally entertaining' - Mary King

Paisley Town Hall
19:30 Ceilidh
Ceilidh with Quirky Jade  and the Reel Fun Ceilidh Band.

Quirky Jade are a trio of singers from the West of Scotland. Aileen, Izzi and Joni sing mainly unaccompanied and cover everything, from their own original perspective to traditional and folk from Scotland (including Burns and Gaelic). Their tastes are eclectic and this provides for a varied programme and some surprises.

We will also be joined by our local folk trio Sunndach. Sunndach are made up of 3 members of the Largs Gaelic Choir, Linda McCallum, Colin Fisher and John Blair who have all individually  won the Silver Pendant at the Royal National Mod , the highest award for adult learners at singing and have been performing  as a group at Mods and elsewhere since 2004 , and recently won the 2008 competition in Falkirk to add to their success in previous years. They sing  Gaelic , Scottish and contemporary songs and released a CD in 2006 , Gu Sunndach. Sunndach means joyful and they try to present this light hearted approach to singing Gaelic and Scottish songs in their performances.

Our band for the evening will be Paisley's own Reel Fun Ceilidh Band - and lots of fun is what we have in store. This experienced trio will have the dance floor full, playing old favourites such as the Gay Gordons, Canadian Barn Dance, or perhaps a Strip the Willow.

There will be breaks in the dancing as some local performers take the floor.

Make sure you don't miss a great Scottish night and get your tickets now!

Due to unforseen circumstances we are unable to provide a bar at this event, although soft drinks will be available. However, we know that you may wish to enjoy the evening with a drink so would encourage you to bring your own!

Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, Paisley
13:00-16:00   Shapenote Workshop
Since October 2007, Shapenote Scotland have been organising regular half-day and all-day workshop singings of shapenote music.  This robust and passionate American folk hymn style, dates back to the New England of the late eighteenth century. It's an austere but joyful sound, thrilling and invigorating to sing, and accessible to all. Music-reading ability is useful but not essential, nor is a "good" voice. We teach the songs by ear and explain their fascinating historical background.

Check our MySpace site http://www.myspace.com/shapenotescotland for background information and some tracks.

Even if you don't want to exercise your voice, do come along later (doors open at 3.00pm) to hear what the participants have achieved- only £3 for an enjoyable experience!
