Concord University Choir (USA) & Les Sirenes |

Paisley Festival Company is very happy to welcome the Concord University choirs, currently on tour in Scotland (where they are performing in Paisley and Edinburgh) and Ireland. Concord University, located in the town of Athens in the state of West Virginia, focuses on a range of liberal arts programmes and prides itself on providing a high quality educational experience for its three thousand students. It has a lively Department of Music, with audition-based entry, directed towards preparing students for professional music careers. The 21 singers, under the direction of Jushua Miller, and accompanied by Jesse Ratcliffe, form three choirs: the mixed-voice Concord Collegiate Singers, the all-treble Camerata Singers and the all-male ConChords.
Last year’s Festival included the first performance with us of Les Sirènes, an all-female group of RSAMD singers, directed by Andrew Nunn, when they supported the appearance of All Angels in Paisley Abbey. We’re delighted they are able to return to Paisley, this time to share the platform with the Concord choirs. Find out more about them at www.lessirenes.webeden.co.uk
The Concord choirs will provide a programme of highly varied traditional songs from African-American, Appalachian, Scottish and Irish origins, complemented by a contribution in similar vein from their flute quartet. Les Sirènes will perform a wide-ranging compilation of songs, from classics to the shows, including Holst’s Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda, accompanied by Charlotte Sager on harp.
The last two items of the evening will be performed jointly by the two groups of students, in the spirit of transatlantic collegiality.

LYRA (Russia) |
| |
Paisley is no stranger to the sonorities of unaccompanied Russian choral music, having hosted performances by the Valaam Ensemble on two separate occasions. So we’re extremely pleased to welcome the quartet LYRA from St Petersburg, on a very busy and extensive tour of Britain.
For more information see www.lyra-online.org/en/about_en.html
The first part of their programme will include sacred music of the Russian Orthodox Church by composers like Bortnianski, Tchaikovski, Tchesnokov, Rachmaninov, Gretchaninov - not all well-known outside of Russia, but nevertheless great masters of choral music. In the contrasting second part of the concert LYRA will perform Russian folk songs in all their wide variety: comic, lyric, dancing, love songs.
We can look forward to having a range of emotions delightfully stirred by this haunting if unfamiliar music, in the marvelous acoustic of St Mirin’s Cathedral.

Paisley Philharmonic Choir |
| |
The Paisley Philarmonic Choir will perform new additions to their repertoire, accompanied by an orchestra and some of Scotland's finest soloists, and are also joined by the Thistle Brass Quintet.
In September 1988 Ian Anderson, then Principal Teacher of Music at Stanely Green High School in Paisley, was asked to form a choir to give a performance of Handel's Messiah as part of Greenlaw Church's centenary. Following the success of that venture, it was decided to constitute the Paisley Philharmonic Choir on a permanent basis in January 2009. Consequently, in May 2009 the choir the Choir celebrated its 20th Anniversary with a performance of the Messiah which also coincided with the Handel 250th Anniversary celebrations.
Since then the Choir has grown to its present strength of approximately 90 members, covering a wide age range and drawing people mainly from the Renfrewshire area but also much further afield from Hamilton in the East to Gourock in the West and from Bearsden in the North to Ayr in the South. The Choir presents three concerts each year in Paisley Town Hall in December, March and May.

30th Anniversary Concert |
| |
2010 marks the 30th anniversary of Thomas Coats Memorial Choral Society, and to celebrate this special occasion, we are giving a performance of Verdi's Requiem.
Once again, the choir will be joined by soloists from the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and, for this concert, the orchestra will be provided by RSAMD too.
The Requiem needs little introduction. It is one of Verdi's greatest masterpieces, an abiding legacy of the late nineteenth century and one of the works all choral societies aspire to perform.
This is a great opportunity to hear some poweful music in the beautiful setting of Coats Memorial Church.
The soloists for the event are:
Elin Pritchard (soprano)
Rebecca Afonwy-Jones (mezzo-soprano)
Jung Soo Yun (tenor)
Michel de Souza (bass)
The singers are accompanied by the RSAMD Symphony Orchestra

Cambrian Male Voice Choir, Tonypandy reformed 1947 |
| |
Kilbarchan West Church is once again proud to be the venue for some top rate singing. Following on from NYCOS we are hosting the Cambrian Male Voice choir from Tonypandy on Sunday the 11th April at 7.30pm, ticket priced £6.
The choir activities are various and widespread. They have sung on numerous occasions at the Festivals of 1000 voices at the Royal Albert Hall. They have given concerts across the length and breadth of Britain and have performed concert tours in America, Canada and Germany. They still take great pleasure in the fact that they were the first Welsh choir to perform in Disneyworld Florida!
Amongst other events the choir participated in a stage production of the works of the author Gwyn Thomas. Actor Glyn Houston required a local choir to help him with the production and he chose the Cambrian. The choir has also participated in the Welsh Association of Male Voice Choirs 'Choir of the Year' Competition, winning the title on two consecutive occasions. They were the Majestic Choir Competition Runner Up in 2008. Following on from their Scottish tour they will be appearing at the Royal Albert Hall, London in October 2010.
Do come along and be entertained by some magnificent singing from this choir in a venue whose acoustics are one of the reasons that they will be performing in Kilbarchan.

The third concert of the invited choirs component of Paisley’s Spring Sing is provided by the Main Street Singers, a 32-strong mixed voice chamber choir, from the Los Altos High School in California, on tour in Scotland and performing in Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Oban as well as Paisley.
The choir, directed by Mark Andrew Schaull, sets itself very high standards and performs music ranging from Renaissance to Contemporary at over a hundred concerts annually. The Gleniffer Singers - Annual Concert 2010 |
| |
It was in 1967 that a number of talented Renfrewshire singers decided to form a choir called the "New Paisley Singers". The attempt almost fell flat on its face when only four men turned up for the launch but the day was saved when the ladies decided to go it alone and form their own ensemble. In 1974 the choir changed its name to "The Gleniffer Singers" and one of its earliest engagements was to appear that year as the group of singing nuns in the Johnstone Phoenix Group's production of "The Sound of Music".
Since that time there have been many notable occurences in the choir's history including the partnership established with the Sonor Chorus from Gladaxe in Denmark, with both choirs visiting each other's countries to give a series of guest concerts. The Gleniffer Singers returned to Denmark a second time to sing at Sonor's 50th anniversary celebrations. Later, at their own 25th anniversary celebrations, the Gleniffer Singers were honoured by a Civic Reception in Paisley Town Hall followed by a Silver Jubilee Concert in the same venue. More recently the choir celebrated its fortieth anniversary with a celebratory dinner and annual concert in 2008. Twice during its history the choir has represented Scotland at the prestigious Royal International Music Festival (Eisteddfod) which is held annually in LLangollen, North Wales. The choir has also beebn successful in other competitions, as mentioned below.
