VOICES IN PAISLEY 2007
In case you missed it, highlights of the 2007 Festival included:
Paisley Choral Festival THE KING'S SINGERS This famous group was embarking on its 40th anniversary tour and gave the only Scottish performance of the tour in Paisley. Needless to say, there was a full house!
Paisley Choral Festival CANTY - Hildegard of Bingen An ensemble of four women's voices from Cappella Nova, Canty specialises in Mediaeval plainsong and polyphony, giving dramatic and entrancing performances which exploit the venue to the best musical effect.
River City's Libby McArthur was Hildegard and the performance was accompanied by the brilliant, improvising instrumentalist William Taylor, playing mediaeval harps (including the wire-strung clarsach or Celtic harp), organistrum and psaltery. A community choir added plainsong chant to give an atmospheric performance.
Paisley Choral Festival CAPPELLA NOVA
The specialists in early music gave a performance of Robert Carver's Mass for Ten Voices and were then joined by a choir of local singers for Thomas Tallis' famous 40 part motet Spem in Alium.
Paisley Choral Festival THE VALAAM ENSEMBLE A group of singers from St Petersburg who presented a programme of Russian folk songs in the beautiful setting of Paisley Abbey.
Fringe Voices! THE TAYLOR WILSON JAZZ TRIO Taylor Wilson's astonishing voice and 'Cabaret' -style performance has been bringing her major credits at the Edinburgh Festival and around Europe - but she hails from Paisley! Taylor's free-spirited style saw her tackle repertoire in this concert which included the jazz standards, songs from the world of Edith Piaf, Dietrich and Kurt Weill, with a sprinkle of humour.
Fringe Voices! THE TANNAHILL WEAVERS The well-travelled folk group were back from touring Europe to perform in the town where it began all those years ago. |
