Paisley is no stranger to the sonorities of unaccompanied Russian choral music, having hosted performances by the Valaam Ensemble on two separate occasions. So we’re extremely pleased to welcome the quartet LYRA from St Petersburg, on a very busy and extensive tour of Britain.
For more information see www.lyra-online.org/en/about_en.html
The first part of their programme will include sacred music of the Russian Orthodox Church by composers like Bortnianski, Tchaikovski, Tchesnokov, Rachmaninov, Gretchaninov - not all well-known outside of Russia, but nevertheless great masters of choral music. In the contrasting second part of the concert LYRA will perform Russian folk songs in all their wide variety: comic, lyric, dancing, love songs.
We can look forward to having a range of emotions delightfully stirred by this haunting if unfamiliar music, in the marvelous acoustic of St Mirin’s Cathedral.
